Roof Windows
Roof windows, also known as roof lights, are the perfect addition to any pitched or flat roof, as they allow both ventilation and natural light to flow throughout your property.
Which type of roof window do I need?
Depending on whether you have a flat roof or a pitched roof will affect the type of roof window you will need. We stock many types of flat roof windows, including roof domes, sun tunnels, and skylights, which all offer impeccable overhead natural lighting, reducing the need for electrical or artificial lighting and in turn saving on energy bills. Sky lights are also perfect for properties with flat roofs that would not normally get much natural light from standard windows.
Pitched Roof Windows
Pitched roof windows are stocked in four main types: electric, manual, fixed and solar. Electric roof lights are perfectly suited for installation in high and hard-to-reach areas, including loft windows. They can be opened by remote control from anywhere in your home, and close automatically if they detect rain. If you’re working on a budget and your windows are easily accessible, manual roof windows would be best suited. Solar windows are very similar to electric windows, but they are powered by the sun rather than a mains electricity supply, making them an excellent eco-conscious choice. They also have the added benefit of no associated electricity cost.
Skylights
Skylights are the name generally given to windows installed in flat roofs. They originated in ancient Rome, although they were unglazed back then. Thanks to advances in modern technology and the industrial revolution, they are incredibly popular today, especially after their French revival.
Skylight windows have many unique benefits that pitched roof windows don’t have. Whilst pitched roof windows are practical, if you’re lucky enough to have a flat roof, fitting a skylight will is an excellent decision. Not only do skylights provide a beautiful view of the daytime sky and the stars at nighttime, they also allow you to have privacy whilst letting natural light in. They can add a sense of nature, and letting the outdoors in, especially in urban environments where the surrounding views from standard windows are otherwise gey and industrial.
Roof Window Blinds
We also stock roof window blinds to perfectly complement your new roof windows. These are perfect for when shade is needed if you are working at a computer screen, or want to create ambient lighting in the summer evenings to wind down. We also offer roof black out blinds to ensure your sleep isn't interrupted by the early-rising sun.
Do I need planning permission to install a roof window?
Whilst official planning permission is not needed to fit a roof window or skylight, there are some rules you must adhere to. The roof windows fitted must not protrude anymore 150mm above the current roof plane, no adjustments can be any higher than the highest point of the roof or roof ridge, and side-facing windows must have obscure glazing. They must also not open unless they are 1.7m above the floor or more.
U-Values
The U-value of a roof window or skylight indicates its thermal efficiency. The lower the U-value, the easier it is for the product to transfer heat to a colder room.
We stock industry-leading roof window brands including VELUX, FAKRO, RoofLITE and Mardome, so you can have every confidence that your roof windows will be built to last.
