While both serve similar purposes, their production methods are not the same. Shingles are crafted by sawing a wooden block on both sides, resulting in a relatively smooth front and back surface. In contrast, Shakes are meticulously hand-split from cedar blocks along the wood's natural grain before being resawn for a uniform, smooth surface.
