For wet-fixing, situate the top row of specially designed short slates to ensure adequate coverage for the ridge. When socketed ridges are used, position the overlapping sockets away from prevalent weather conditions. Apply mortar to edge bed all ridges to solid bed ridge tile joints. Make sure the bedding and pointing are done neatly. The mortar mixture should consist of three parts sharp sand and one part Portland cement. For an enhanced bond between the ridge and mortar, apply a proprietary bonding agent mixed with cement to the ridge's underside.
As needed, use additional mechanical fastenings in line with BS 5534 Part 1 (2003) and current codes of practice, then securely bed the end ridge tile in mortar. For hips, affix a compatible hip iron at the base of the hip rafter where necessary. Trim the bottom hip tile to align with the eaves, allowing neat bedding and pointing. Avoid applying the mortar in cold, wet, or excessively warm conditions.
