What are the benefits of a green roof?
Biodiversity
One of the main reasons that people opt for a green roof is the wide range of biodiversity and sustainable features they offer. They are an eco-friendly solution due to encouraging an extensive range of wildlife to your area and enabling them to thrive and reproduce. Providing a habitat for multiple different species will leave you feeling accomplished about doing your bit in saving the planet.
Urban and Visual Appeal
Not only are green roofs a credit to improving the environment, but they have aesthetic value, too. They are particularly beneficial to properties in more urban settings, as they provide an array of colour and life to otherwise grey landscapes. Urban greening can also have a positive impact on residents’ mental health, improve work productivity and create a sanctuary of escapism in cities catering to busy lifestyles.
Reducing your Carbon Footprint
We all want to do what we can when it comes to contributing to saving the planet. Green roofs aid in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere thanks to their vast vegetation, improving air quality. They also provide an additional layer of insulation, meaning your property can stay cooler in the summer and warmer in winter, saving on the use of electricity which burns fossil fuels like gas and oil. It can also reduce costs from using central heating, air conditioning, and fans.
What are the different types of green roof and which one is the best for my property?
Sedum Blanket System
Sky Garden’s sedum blanket system is pre-grown and includes 8-12 hand-picked greenery and other species that will thrive all-year round. This easy to maintain living roof system is made up of a protection fleece, drainage board with a bonded filter fleece to help regulate excess moisture, a 60-80mm substrate to accommodate for the growing plants roots, and of course the sedum blanket itself. These systems are suited to roofs such as outbuildings or extensions on standard homes, that may be lacking in colour and vitality.
Wildflower Blanket System
Grown over 6 months to ensure they arrive as healthy as possible, Sky Garden’s wildflower blanket system contains over 38 species and is best suited to larger scale roofs such as communal roof tops or those of commercial buildings. Much like the sedum blanket system, they include a protection fleece for additional waterproofing, drainage board, a biodiverse 100mm substrate and the blanket itself.
Sedum Roof Modular Tray
The innovative modular roof tray from Sky Garden is made up of 8-12 species and is designed to be installed quickly and easily. The individual trays are lightweight and can be lifted if a roof inspection is required. They have an optional bonding strip for low-pitched roofs to secure them in place, and an irrigation system can be installed if needed. They are well-suited to larger scale green roofing projects.
