What are roof battens primarily used for?
Roof battens, also known as roofing lath, or tile batten, are perfect for fixing roof tiles, slates and sheets in place. Each wooden roofing batten is manufactured in accordance with the British Standard and is available in a variety of lengths and sizes.
These slim, elongated wooden strips create a reliable framework for the secure installation of roof tiles, promoting enhanced drainage, moisture resistance, and ventilation. With their durability and ability to evenly distribute the weight of the tiles, tile battens contribute to a longer-lasting and more weather-resistant roof.
Are there any other benefits to timber battens and boards?
Roof batten can also aid with ventilation within a roof space, and thus improve air circulation and moisture levels throughout the rest of the property. They create a gap between the roof covering, normally tiles or sheets, and the main structure to help airflow and reduce the risk of mould and damp.
What is the difference between C16 and C24 timber?
C16 timber meets the minimum strength regulations and adheres British standards to be used on roofs for general construction purposes. This includes residential properties, or any structure where the roof would be considered lightweight and less load-bearing.
C24 timber also meets British standards but is a higher strength class than C16 timber. This means it is suitable for larger and more commercial buildings and roofs, as it can withstand heavier load-bearing weights.
Both C16 and C24 timber and battens are often made of high-quality softwoods including pine, redwood and spruce.
